Exposure and Risk Assessment

Exposure Assessments

Versar's exposure assessment expertise spans more than 40 years, with specialization in the investigation and characterization of human and environmental exposures to contaminants such as:

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Pesticides
  • Toxic substances
  • Chemicals found in consumer products
  • Hazardous wastes

We have supported the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in conducting exposure assessments for contaminants that may be found in air, surface water, soil, ground water, landfills, foods, and consumer products. We continue to support multiple EPA offices including the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics; the Office of Research & Development; the Office of Water; and the Office of Pesticide Programs by conducting various tasks (under Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) guidelines) that include:

  • Characterizing environmental fate and exposure pathways
  • Reviewing and compiling exposure factors data
  • Conducting literature search, compiling, and statistically analyzing monitoring, biomonitoring, and exposure data
  • Developing, calibrating, and running fate and transport and exposure assessment models

Risk Assessments

Versar has conducted human-health and ecological risk assessments at more than 100 Formerly Used Defense Site/Superfund sites in the last 25 years. We have supported the US Army, Air Force, and Navy under RCRA and CERCLA guidelines to conduct screening level and baseline human health and ecologicalrisk assessments for contaminants such as metals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated byphenyls found in soil, sediment, surface water, ground water, and biota. In addition, we continue to support multiple EPA offices with efforts associated with chemical-specific risk assessments. In the recent years, we have assisted EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics with risk assessments of TSCA work plan chemicals that have the following consumer uses:

  • Chemicals found in paint strippers, and spot removers
  • Brominated flame retardants
  • Engineered nanomaterials
  • Chemicals used as synthetic musk in fragrances

Peer Review Services

For more than 15 years, the research and regulatory programs of multiple Federal agencies (EPA, Food and Drug Administration, and US Consumer Product Safety Commission) have relied on Versar to help ensure the merit of the data and risk assessments upon which the agencies make critical decisions. Versar has conducted more than 500 peer reviews in areas such as:

  • Human health and ecological risk assessment
  • Fate and transport modeling
  • Water quality assessment
  • Toxicology and pharmacology

Versar has helped numerous Federal agencies meet and exceed the data quality guidelines by objectively selecting peer reviewers; providing information to peer reviewers; preparing peer review reports; organizing peer review meetings; and providing meeting support. Conducting scientific peer reviews and preparing high quality reports has been, and continues to be, an exciting way for us to support these agencies. We have developed a database that provides access to thousands of subject matter experts in disciplines related to environmental engineering and science, public health, toxicology, chemistry, and other related fields.
